you ought to say it.  That’s what I believe, and what I’m doing.  I’ve been sitting here on the couch engaging in my Sunday morning ritual watching political talk shows.  As I watch I am reminded over and over again how little our elected officials care about the people who gave them their jobs.  It’s all about one-up-manship.  The Republicans can’t stand the fact the Obama and his Democratic crew handed them their ass in 2008.  So now the only concern for Republicans is to deny any and everything the Democrats want, and plotting on how they get reclaim their former glory.  The Democrats for their part, are too wimpy to stand up for the things they campaigned on, and promised us when they wanted our votes.

This leaves us on our own.  I’ve spoken about it before, we have effectively given our power away.  The greedy and selfish politicians who we put in office will not look after our interests unless we force them to do it by reclaiming what we have apathetically given away.  So how do we fix this mess we find ourselves in?  We  first have to believe that we can fix it.  This is the most important point.  Far too many people think that there is nothing they can do.  They believe that the politicians are going to do what they want no matter what, and the politicians count on that kind of hopelessness and apathy.

Secondly we have to get informed.  That doesn’t mean we have to become political experts, it simply means that we have to know what our own interests are, and what the politicians are doing about those interests.  So…the action plan is this… give some thought to what concerns you.  Don’t be corralled into what talk show hosts say, pay attention to your own personal interests.  Once you’ve determined that, go on the Internet and get the email and or phone number of your elected officials and contact them regularly, informing them of what your interests are.  Let them know that your vote cannot be taken for granted, and that if your interests are not fought for, you WILL vote for someone else.

Another thing you can do is talk to your friends and family.  Encourage them to be vocal about their own interests and to resist being told what to think by radio and TV talking heads.  If we as a people can get to a place of belief in our own personal power, then we can change things in this country for good.  If we don’t, then we can look forward to more abuse by the Overlords…these government officials run amok.

If you have something to say…say it.  If you don’t have something to say…you’re part of the problem…I’m just saying.

I’m mad at our elected officials.  I’m mad because NONE OF THEM ARE WORTH ANYTHING AT ALL!!!!!!!  (Sometimes a primal scream is just what the doctor ordered.)  We elected Barack Obama and a whole lot of Democrats to bring change to America.  Instead what we got is the same damn thing.  I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am.  I thought this time it would be different, and “Change” really would come, but nope…no such luck.

I really was excited by Obama, now I just feel like I got suckered.  Obama so far is just like the rest of them…he makes these grandiose promise when he’s running for office and once he’s in he doesn’t do anything he promised he would.  Unemployment is higher than he said it would be.  Health-care reform with a PUBLIC OPTION is on life support (pardon the pun).  Guantanamo Bay is still open.  Congressional negotiations were supposed to be on CSPAN.  There was supposed to be unprecedented openness and bi-partisanship…that’s a no go on both of those.  There was going to be a whole host (one of Obama’s favorite words) of green energy jobs from the Stimulus Bill…but those are “still on the way”.

The Republicans are just as bad.  Their only mission is to see to it that nothing at all gets done while Obama is president.  Then they hope to regain power.  Just say no, that is their governing mindset.  In the meantime people are suffering from the arrogance and ignorance of the people we elected to make possible a good and productive life for us.  The truth of the matter is harsh, and it’s this…Our government officials don’t care about us.  How do I know that?  Simply look at what’s getting done, and what isn’t.  All they care about are power and the perks and privileges of that power.

So what’s the solution?  I think that we the American people should start a movement to vote out of office every single incumbent in the country.  Let’s send a message that they work for us.  From our State officials all the way up to the president, they are public servants, and as such they should SERVE US.  Let’s start with a clean slate, and require that these people serve our needs.  Let’s demand common sense solutions to the challenges that face us.  Let’s speak up and become the democracy we were supposed to be.  What we have now is no democracy, it’s no ‘rule of the people’.  What we have now is a joke…and a bad one at that.

I welcome your comments.

Well…I said before Obama can’t save you, and I am convinced that is true.  In fact there is no government official that will do for you what you won’t do for yourself.  Nobody can save you…but here’s the good news…Nobody else has to, because you can save yourself.  The gift that President Obama gives to us is the gift of seeing ourselves.  What do I mean by that?  As eloquent and inspiring as Mr. Obama has been it has become clear that even he, cannot change the quality of our lives in any subsequent way except perhaps in a bad way.

Mr. Obama and Mrs. Obama have said many times on the campaign trail that “We are the change we have been waiting for.”  That is the magic bullet!  I have heard the president say that “It’s not about me…or the congress…it’s about you.”  This is where you and I have to sit up, take notice, and then take action.  All the horrible financial conditions that we find ourselves suffering through is a result of choices we all collectively have made.  We gave our power away to elected officials who don’t care about us, or can’t care for us.  We spent money we didn’t have, and let our government do the same.  We didn’t save for a rainy day…we thought the sun would shine eternally, only to find out that…it doesn’t.  Sometimes it rains and right now a whole lot of us are getting soaked.

So in his State Of The Union address president Obama I’m sure will give a great speech.  He will say it is still important for  all Americans to have health insurance, and it is.  He will say that republicans and democrats should work in a bi-partisan way (I’ve grown to hate that term) and they should.  The president will say that the economy has gotten better but we still have a long way to go, and we do.  There are terrorists out there that demand our vigilant defense and sometimes offense…check.  The president will say lots of things both inspiring and bothersome.  But what the president won’t say, is the thing he most needs to say, and it’s this – “I can’t save you, neither can the congress.”

He won’t say it perhaps because he believes he can, or maybe he honestly doesn’t want to.  Either way the truth is still the same…The government can build the road but we the people have to drive the car to where we want to be.  I was a big supporter of Mr. Obama, I still think there is a lot of potential he has yet to realize.  So far I am sad to say I am not impressed.  He over promised and under delivered.  But…that’s what politicians do.

Right now the State Of The Union is horrible…but you and I can turn it around.  That is my prayer and determination for our country.  So I really hope that Mr. Obama will get about the business of building us some roads…because I think a whole lot of people are about to burn rubber on the way to the America we’re supposed to be.

What a world we live in.  Terrorism has been around for a very long time, but it’s really popular now.  A war on terror may on it’s face seem like the thing to do.  After all terror is …terrible.  All good people want to live in a world free from the horrors that terrorism rains upon innocent people.  We all were mortified by the nightmare of 9-11, the bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma, car bombs in the Middle East.  All of us hate terrorism and it’s affects…at least all of us decent people.  However a “war on terrorism” is a dumb idea.

Before you get upset with me, let me explain.  (I hope I don’t go too far over my head)  Terrorism is a tactic.  Basically it involves violence against innocent people with a desire to bring about some some political, religious, or philosophical net result.  Terrorists are by definition unbalanced.  They are most certainly not impressed with our war on terror…especially the ones who blow themselves up with their victims.  Terrorists are filled with hate, and hate is a very powerful and infectious force.  I am inclined to believe that we cannot kill enough of ‘them‘ to make them stop hating us.

Once again…we cannot kill enough terrorists to make them stop hating us.  Think about gang violence…the ‘Crips’ kill some ‘Bloods’ and the ‘Bloods’ are gonna get even.  You kill one of ours we kill two of yours.  So now the ‘Crips’ have to “re-get even” and the cycle NEVER STOPS!!!!!!!  Every single time we kill a terrorist we reaffirm their reason for hating us.  More young men sign up for the cause because the bomb we dropped killed somebody’s mama…so now they REALLY have to get even.  As long as we’re in the cycle the cycle will never ever end.

Now…before you call me a crazy pacifist wimp, I do not believe that we can just sit back and allow ourselves to be brutalized.  However for this horrible merry-go-round to stop someone has to get off, and put on the brakes.  This is what I believe…the terrorists aren’t evil just for it’s own sake.  I really don’t think that they care that much about Americans wearing Nikes and eating at McDonald’s.  I think they perpetrate the evil of terrorism because they don’t know what else to do.  They want something and they don’t know how to go about getting it.  In and of itself these terrorists get no thrill from killing us and themselves…at least I don’t think so.  They want something…and you know what?  I think that what they really really really want is real close to what I want and what you want.

You want to end terrorism Mr. President?  Find out what they really want.  Step outside preconceptions and justifiable rage at their violence and find out what they want.  If we can find a way to help them to see how they can get it (God knows terrorism hasn’t worked) maybe we can spend some of that Iraq and Afghanistan money on a proper economic recovery plan…ya know what I’m sayin??

Trust me on this one…I get it.  For a lot of people out there this economy is like “The Nightmare on Your Street”.  People are losing their jobs or their hours are getting cut.  People losing houses, health insurance, and most importantly self esteem.  There are people who have done incredibly thoughtless or even criminal things to drive our economy into the ground.  Those people should be held accountable…but that ain’t gonna pay your mortgage or rent next week…trust me I get it.  President Obama keeps saying that things will probably get worse before they get better.  Or that it’s going to take some time before the ‘Stimulus Plan’ begins to yield results, but that in time it will help us.  None of our politicians seem to understand that we the people have to actually survive to three or four or God forbid eight years from now.  Our car payments, rent, groceries, and kid’s college tuition will not wait for the Stimulus Plan to kick in.  Those things demand money right now…trust me…I get it.  All this is true…so now what?

Recognizing or even bitching about the rotten ass hand our elected officials have dealt us will not pay one single solitary bill for anyone.  What it will do is make us more mad, more hopeless, and still up the damn creek without a paddle, or maybe even without a canoe.  So now what?  One of the things that makes life so difficult in the tendency to live anywhere but where we are right now.  By that I mean we worry about what happened to us yesterday, the day before or even twenty years ago.  We also like to worry about tomorrow.  The problem with this is that not matter what, we can ONLY live right now…in this moment.  Right now in this moment we can make a choice, and that is where our power can be utilized.

One of the greatest things we can do for ourselves is to be responsible for where we are in life.  When we are having a really tough time, taking responsibility for that can be extremely difficult.  It is always easier to blame someone or something else for our troubles…and I do understand that.  However there is power in responsibility…that is… the ability to respond.  So what we need to do as individuals and by extension as a nation is to take responsibility for where we are at.  Then we can make choices about how we can improve upon our situation.  Without our consent the future will indeed come…and it will go. The question is what will you and I do with the time between now and then. The choices we make today and everyday are what will shape our future.  That is the power of taking responsibilty.  If we are responsible for our difficulties, then we can also be responsible for our success.

We are creative beings of unimagined possibilities.  We cannot fathom the spectacular things we can achieve, because there really are no limits to our potential.  I believe we are made in the image of God.  and that doesn’t mean we look like God.  I think we have god-like super human capabilities.  We can summon that power, by having faith in our own greatness, and opening our minds and hearts to the infinite wisdom of the universe.  Then we can use that creative power to make whatever kind of life we want to have.

So now what?  Let’s all resolve to face our challenges head on.  The great dragon will cower when you look it in the eye.  Challenges, even seemingly impossible ones, cannot withstand the withering offensive of a determined will to overcome them.  I said it before “Obama can’t save you”, neither can the government stimulus plan.  That’s the bad news.  The good news is that you can save yourself.  That’s what I’m gonna do.

What a wonderful day!  No matter what your political persuasion, if you are an American I think that you have to be proud of what happened today.  On the veranda of the capital building that African slaves helped build, we elected our first African American president.  Mr. Obama our 44th President looked out over the National Mall where there where slaves were bought and sold several hundred years ago, and charted out a new day for America.  The pomp and circumstance was heart warming and inspiring.  This peaceful and orderly transfer of power is the envy of the world.  What a truly wonderful day.

Well…tomorrow is a new day.  A day that will start early for the new president.  He will have on his plate a TON of challenges and responsibilities.  I believe he is up to the job.  Perhaps a more important consideration is whether or not we the American people are up to the job.  While we really do need a great leader at the helm of government, each and every one of us needs to be responsible to ourselves and our American community.  We got into this economic mess because so many of us failed to live responsibly.  We consume ridiculous amounts of energy, we spend money we don’t have or can’t afford to spend, and we let our political leaders run amok without answering to us.

I as an American am so very proud of Mr. Obama and this country for the progress we’ve made.  But please be clear there is still real work to be done.  I do know however, that if we put our minds and hearts to it, we can bring back prosperity to America.  We have to believe, and then act persistently upon that belief.  Today was a wonderful day…and if we are determined, tomorrow will be even more wonderful.

Tuesday January 20, 2009 Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th president and I hope that’s what it will be…a New Day.  I’ve been into politics for several years, and pretty heavily in the last couple of years.  I’ve seen some good politicians and I’ve seen some bad ones (George Bush)…Ahem!!  I’ve also seen some good ones do some bad things (Bill Clinton) Ahem!!  This new guy Barack Obama seems to be different.  He’s young, good looking, in great shape, and is a master of words.  Those words make me feel better, bigger, and stronger.  They make me feel like I can do more.  His words make me feel hopeful.  I don’t know him but I feel like if I were talking to him, he’d actually care about what I had to say.

The world is very different than just seven or eight months ago.  The economy has slowed to a crawl…and backwards at that.  Israel and Palestine and killing each other…again.  Terror attacks in India, a senate seat for sale (allegedly), on OJ is in jail (I’m not sure where that came from).  There are a lot of gigantic problems on the plate for our new president.  I happen to think that we’re all here for something great.  I think Obama was destined to become president.  I think his temperament, his style, his inclusiveness and his grand rhetoric make him exactly the right person at the right time.  I’m certain he understands the gravity of the problems we face, and I think he’s up to the challenge.

Now, I’m under no delusion that he is our saviour.  I’m sure there will be plenty of missteps.  But January 20th will be a new day.  I think Obama will change the world, and I think he will do it by inspiring us to change our own world.  I think things are about to get really interesting…what do you think?
